Join Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) on November 13 at 8:00 PM EST for a special update on the Ebola crisis in West Africa.
MSF has been responding to the current outbreak since March, and the organization’s response has grown to include more than 3,000 MSF staff and 600 beds throughout Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea.
With nearly 10,000 cases and 5,000 deaths, this Ebola outbreak is unprecedented. Despite promises of greater assistance from many quarters, MSF is still seeing critical gaps in all aspects of the response—while continuing to see and treat as many patients as possible.
The panel will include MSF aid workers recently returned from assignments in Guinea and Liberia, along with members of MSF headquarters staff. This wide-ranging discussion will include first-hand accounts of working with patients and communities, the ongoing problem of fear and stigma in West Africa and here in the US, and the challenges facing the international community going forward.

 

Panelists include:
Carissa Guild, RN, is an experienced MSF nurse and medical team leader with extensive Ebola experience, including responding to a 2012 outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and twice this year in Guéckédou, Guinea.
Kim Federici-Florczak, RN, worked with health promotion teams in Liberia responsible for retrieving the sick and deceased, explaining how to avoid transmission, and helping resolve misunderstanding and distrust among local populations.
Thomas Rassinger, field human resources officer for MSF, was a project coordinator in Monrovia, Liberia, and oversaw the planning and distribution of household protection kits, and communication strategies for health promotion workers.
Dr. David Olson, MSF deputy medical director, is an American board-certified physician of internal medicine who has worked as the medical advisor for the US section of MSF since 2004, and has been the lead medical referent in the New York office during the current Ebola outbreak.
Tim Shenk, moderator, MSF press officer, spent two weeks as the lead field communications officer in Liberia during the outbreak, will moderate the discussion.
