Detroit Councilman McCalister applauds Wayne County resolution

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                            April 13, 2021

Councilman Roy McCalister applauds the Wayne County Commission’s resolution in support of reestablishing American-Cuban diplomatic relations

I am heartened today to hear the news that the Wayne County Commission has voted to encourage President Biden to reestablish diplomatic relations with the nation of Cuba. In February 2019, Detroit City Council authored a similar declaration and I was a proud co-sponsor of that resolution.

Additionally, I myself have enjoyed working to establish stronger bonds between our countries having visited both the Cuban embassy in Washington, DC and Cuba in 2019. Once the current pandemic restrictions on travel are further lifted, I look forward to returning to Cuba to continue working with my friends there on issues surrounding mental and physical health and to continue to forge strong bonds between the American people and the people of Cuba.

With a man of decency and compassion back in the White House, I am optimistic that the work started by President Obama in 2016 when he visited Cuba, may resume again.

Sincerely,

Roy McCalister, Jr.

Detroit City Council
