Participatory Democracy in Cuba, Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia
Arnold August speaks on peoples’ democracy and empowerment in the ALBA countries, which form the bulwark of anti-imperialism in Latin America. His book explores Cuba’s unique form of democracy, presenting a detailed analysis of Cuba’s electoral process. By also comparing the practices in Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador with the US system, August shows that people’s participation in politics and society is not limited to a US-defined understanding of democracy, a largely non-participatory system. Cuba (and Venezuela) are laboratories where democratization is continually in motion, creating new ways for people to participate.
