Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Abelardo Moreno said in Havana that the Second Summit of the Community of Latin America and Caribbean States (CELAC) will seek to declare the region a peace zone and a zone free of nuclear weapons.

It is essential that the heads of State and Government give their support so the conflicts will be always solved by means of dialogues and negotiations, Moreno said during an interview with the national TV.

He recalled that the 33 country members of CELAC have signed the Treaty of Tlatelolco, which prohibits nuclear weapons in Latin American and the Caribbean. But, he noted, this effort is not enough and the region should seek unity to attain peace.

Moreno also said that the preparations for the event go smoothly and that the drafts of a political declaration and an action plan for 2014 are now being discussed in the distance.

Around 26 special communications are in preparation, the deputy minister revealed. They deal with topics such as the struggle of Argentina to regain the Malvines Islands, the domain of transnationals, the exploitation of natural resources, the economic, and financial and commercial blockade of the United States against Cuba, culture policies and terrorism.

On January 28 and 29, the Pabexpo fairgrounds in Havana will receive the delegations of the country members of CELAC. The summit will be preceded by the meeting of national experts on January 25 and 26, and the meeting of Foreign Ministers on January 27.

Created in 2011, in Caracas, CELAC is regarded as the most important institutional occurrence of the region. The first summit of the body was held in 2013 in Santiago de Chile, where Cuba assumed the pro tempore presidency, which it will transfer to Costa Rica this year
