Havana, Mar 2 (Prensa Latina) Cuba is the only country in the world that has been conducting annual vaccination campaigns since 1962, free of charge, accessible to the entire population and highly effective, ensured today’s health authorities.Doctors Sonia Resik and Belkis Galindo, specialists in microbiology and epidemiology, respectively, of the Institute of Tropical Medicine Pedro Kouri, told the press the benefits of the drugs applied in two cycles, orally and intradermic, their effectiveness, benefits and contributions to the Global Program for the Eradication of Poliomyelitis.
They stressed that this high level of immunization works because of political will of the Cuban State to apply a preventive vaccination, in which all children should be given the corresponding dose as it is the way to protect them from the possibility of a lifelong disability.
Poliomyelitis is an infectious-contagious disease, which affects central nervous system, can cause inflammation of the brain and the motor neurons in the spinal cord generating muscle atrophy, paralysis, deformity and even death.
Both doctors confirmed the effectiveness and benefits of the vaccine distributed, supported by high level scientific research in the country that have even contributed to making changes in global vaccination policies against that disease.
The specialists commented that Cuba will begin the 59th polio vaccination campaign on March 2, in two stages, to children from one month to nine years, 11 months and 29 days
From 1962 to date the island has supplied 856.7 million doses of the oral vaccine, which means that the entire Cuban population under 72 is protected against polio, actions that in many parts of the world are neglected.
