Cuban Foreign Minister: U.S. is a Real Threat to this Hemisphere
That nation has a quarter of a million soldiers, 800 military bases in 80 countries, and is a superpower that threatens a small island, said the island’s chief diplomat.
He called on the international community to stop and act against the folly and irresponsibility of Washington, said the foreign minister.
The dangerous escalation must be stopped for the good of the peoples of Cuba, the United States, the region and the planet, said Rodríguez.
On the measures announced by Washington against Cuba, he said they are doomed to failure and will also cause the isolation of the northern nation.
Rodriguez pointed out that Cuba and the families of the largest of the Antilles should not be hostages to the internal political struggle of the northern country between Republicans and Democrats, which he described as immoral and dirty.
Rodríguez reiterated that the island does not have troops, nor does it participate in military or security operations in Venezuela.
We await the action of the General Assembly of the United Nations, the World Trade Organization and other multilateral bodies, and the solidarity of the international community and world public opinion.
He added that the declared objective is to suffocate the economy and punish the people in order to press for political concessions by the Government of the largest of the Antilles.
However, he pointed out that, despite the negative impact for Cubans, the United States will not be able to achieve its old desire to destroy the Cuban Revolution.
He recalled that Cuba has Law 80 approved by the National Assembly of People’s Power in 1996, which declares the Helms-Burton as illegal, unenforceable and of no value.
The Cuban legislation instructs Havana authorities to provide legal security to investors and foreign commercial counterparts on the island.
Bruno Rodríguez once again thanked the international community’s rejection to the measures adopted by the Donald Trump administration.
Regarding the announced limitation of remittances, he pointed out that it not only hurts the income of Cuban families, but also damages the freedom and the right of those who live in the northern country.
‘Those measures will seriously damage the self-employed sector of the Cuban economy,’ he said.
The elimination of consular services in Havana forces Cubans to travel to a third country in order to obtain a visa to enter the United States, encouraging the trafficking of people, feeds the bands that are dedicated to it and put at risk the lives of people who are involved in this type of journey.
He ratified that the Government of the Caribbean nation will continue the rapprochement and the narrowing of ties between the nation and its emigration, with all sectors of American society and with the rest of the world.
The foreign minister also referred to the restriction of travel to Americans who visit Cuba, about which, he said, ‘the National Security Advisor, John Bolton, did not have the same opinion of the voters,’ particularly with the 650 thousand Americans who visited the island in 2018 or the majority of Cubans living in that country.
It means that the official ignores the opinion of the citizens of the United States of different sectors of society that want a normal and respectful relationship between both countries.
