March 13-14 Cuba Literacy Volunteer in Bay Area

Blanca Monett, a fourteen-year-old when Fidel Castro put out a call in 1960 for teachers to go into the rural areas of Cuba to teach literacy in the campaign (“Each one teach one”), is visiting in the Bay Area.

There are two opportunities to hear lively, humorous, and inspiring stories of her experiences with the program that made Cuba the first in the Americas to receive the U.N. designation of  “a nation free of illiteracy.” The film “Maestra” will be shown as well.
Her first appearance is on Monday, March 13th beginning at 2:00 PM at Chabot College;

The second will be Tuesday, March 14th beginning at 4:10 at San Francisco State University.  The map for the second can be found at http://www.chabotcollege.edu/about/CampusMap.asp with a further explanation: the event center is off building 700.  It will be marked, and using the closest lot is best and an easy walk.
This is Blanca’s first trip to the U.S. Come meet her and hear how that experience changed Cuba forever.
