MEDICC Celebrates the
Historic US-Cuba Health Sector Agreements
|
MEDICC celebrated the historic Memorandum for Understanding between the US and Cuban health sectors, signed by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell and Cuba’s Minister of Public Health Dr. Roberto Morales Ojeda.
The umbrella accord opens the way for collaboration on a range of public health concerns including emerging infectious diseases such as Zika, as well as chronic non-communicable diseases such as cancer.
“This is a win-win for Americans and Cubans. We’re now one step closer to a safer, healthier future for people in both countries,” said MEDICC Executive Director Gail Reed. “But, this is also just the first step. We hope President Obama will further open the door to cooperation by facilitating joint programs, research and drug development.” MEDICC recently published a white paper highlighting actions the President can take to increase health cooperation: ” A Safer, Healthier Future Through U.S.-Cuba Cooperation.”

MEDICC Co-Founder Gail Reed Named Interim Executive Director
|
The MEDICC Board of Directors has designated Gail Reed as Interim Executive Director, to replace Pierre LaRamée. Ms Reed was founding CEO of MEDICC in 1997 and served in that capacity until 2013, when she decided to concentrate on the journal MEDICC Review as Executive Editor. She will continue in that capacity going forward.
“I can think of no one better person to step in at this vital time for MEDICC, as two decades of our efforts to build US-Cuba cooperation in health are coming to fruition and the organization is playing a vital role in shaping this future,” said Dr Peter Bourne, Board Chair.

2016 Community Connections
Close to 30 current U.S. ELAM students will complete four-week summer rotations at clinics and hospitals throughout the United States this summer as part of MEDICC’s Community Connections program. These rotations and their learning objectives are designed as either observerships or clerkships, depending on the student’s level of study, and provide an invaluable opportunity for students to obtain first-hand knowledge and skills about the U.S. healthcare system in preparation for their residency programs. Several new sites are hosting students this year, with rotations occurring from late June through late August.
2016 Residency Programs Begin
MEDICC congratulates the fifteen graduates of the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) who are now beginning their residency programs that they matched to during the 2016 Match. The graduates are pursuing careers in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Psychiatry. Please join us in congratulating these exceptional doctors as they embark on the next phase of their journey, working to make a positive impact on medically underserved communities throughout the United States.

MEDICC Welcomed Miguel Coyula,
Cuban Architect & Urban Planner

In June, MEDICC and its Community Partnerships for Health Equity (CPHE) program welcomed Miguel Coyula to the USA for a familiarization and speaking tour of three CPHE 2.0 communities over two weeks: South Los Angeles: Albuquerque, NM; and Oakland, California.
“Having Miguel join us at three different, very unique CPHE sites had such an impact, for CPHE and for him,” said CPHE Program Director Diane Appelbaum. “He brought fresh perspective and insight to each CPHE site’s efforts, collaborated with CPHE members on developing new ideas for mutual benefit between Cuban and US communities, and told me he left feeling inspired by the passion and commitment of community members in each location.”

Travel with MEDICC to Cuba in December 2016!

You have a unique opportunity to visit Cuba with MEDICC, December 11-18, 2016. Applications for the trip are open now until September 1. This program will be limited to 20 participants to maximize individual exchanges and exploration of Cuban health and culture. 
MEDICC invites health and related professionals, and their adult traveling companions to learn firsthand about Cuban health care, community programs and culture by joining this 7-day trip to Havana. To learn more about this exciting opportunity, take a look at our announcement! To travel on this program, your passport must be valid through June 18, 2017. A non-refundable deposit of $500 and required documents will be due by October 1. Program costs are estimated at $4,800 – $5,200, and an overnight in Miami is required on Saturday, December 10.
Please note: costs and arrangements are subject to change due to heavy demand for Cuba travel in the upcoming season.
