TRANSPORTATION

Transportation Tips
The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is located just south and west of downtown Chicago which is called “the Loop”.  It has both an east and a west campus.  All of the NNOC events will be on the east campus.  As in all large cities, best practice is to walk with others as you travel to and from the NNOC meeting, rapid transit or hotel locations after dark.
Getting to the University from the airports
Chicago is home to two airports:  O’Hare International Airport and Midway International Airport. There are several ways to reach UIC from either airport.  You may opt to take a taxi, bus, or subway, also known in Chicago as the ‘L’.
From Chicago O’Hare Airport
TAXI – A taxi will cost about $50-$60 from O’Hare Airport to UIC.  There is an established taxi dispatching location on the lower level of the terminals.  Be sure the taxi meter is on during your ride and that you pay only the amount displayed on the meter (a 15-20% tip is customary).  Do not establish a set fee with the taxi driver.  Avoid the use of expensive “limousines.”  Taxi companies can pick you up at an established address.  Taxi Companies: FlashCab:  773-561-4444  YellowCab:  312-829-4222
The Continental Go Airport Express bus (lower level — O’Hare) costs approximately $28 one-way and $50 round-trip and takes you anywhere downtown.  The Continental Air Transport hours of operation are 5 am-11 pm.  You can make a reservation for the bus online or call 1-773-247-1200.  From downtown, a taxi can take you to the UIC campus for about $15.
CTA Rapid Transit – If you can carry your own luggage, you may want to take the subway, also known as the “CTA Rapid Transit train” or “L.” You can board the L directly from the lower level at O’Hare to “UIC/Halsted” stop. This is a Blue line train and is the only train that goes to O’Hare.  You can purchase a single ride ticket at O’hare and the fare will be $5.00.   The trip takes approximately 1 hour. This is a special fare from O’hare.  Regular cost of a rapid transit train trip is $2.25 and transfers are $.25.  If you plan to use rapid transit a lot during your visit you may want to purchase a Ventra Card which can be loaded with any amount needed.  The Ventra card costs $5, but if you register it online the cost is refunded to the card.
From Midway Airport
If you arrive at Midway Airport, southwest of the city, you may take a taxi directly to the campus, or use The Continental Go Airport Express bus to go to anywhere downtown.  A one-way trip from Midway Airport costs $23 and a round-trip is $40.  The hours of operation are from 5 am-11 pm.  From downtown, you can take a cab to UIC for about $15.
Chicago Transit Authority —  You can take the Orange line “L”/CTA from Midway Airport to the “Clark/Lake” stop,  transfer to the Blue line and disembark at the “UIC/Halsted” stop.  The Orange line is the only line that goes to Midway Airport.  You can purchase a single ride ticket for $2.25 at the station and it includes the transfer to the Blue line. If you plan to use rapid transit a lot during your visit you may want to purchase a Ventra Card which can be loaded with any amount needed.  The Ventra card costs $5, but if you register it online the cost is refunded to the card immediately.
