NNOC Statement on Julian Bond

The National Network On Cuba would like to express condolences and sympathy to the family of Julian Bond. Bond is well known for his lifelong struggles in the civil rights movement; a founder of Student Non Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), chair of the NAACP, President of the Southern Poverty Law Center, and member of the Georgia State Legislature for 20 years.

Julian Bond was also a supporter of Cuba, first travelling there in 1959 to celebrate the triumph of the revolution. He was particularly impressed with the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM).   He visited Cuba and ELAM in 2006 and met with U.S. students there.  According to MEDICC: “Impressed with their commitment, he noted: ‘from talking to the students we met, it was clear they would be a very different kind of doctor…practitioners who are not just skilled as physicians, but who carry with them a concern for the underserved and forgotten.” Bond’s admiration for the Cuban people and support for Cuban sovereignty never wavered.

We honor Julian Bond’s life of activism, commitment to justice, and dedication to civil and human rights.
