Photo: InternetCuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla denounced the April 30 terrorist attack on the Cuban embassy in Washington, as the result of the U.S. government’s hateful policy toward our country.
In a press conference May 12, the Cuban Foreign Minister explained that the individual responsible for the events, Alexander Alazo Baró, is of Cuban origin and has been living in the United States since 2010. He recognized the prompt, professional action of local and the Secret Service at the time of the attack, but noted that the State Department delayed almost five days before contacting Cuban authorities, and denounced the complicit silence of the U.S. government.
He stressed the need for the United States government to explain its motives for remaining silent about the incident and keeping it out of the public eye.
The Foreign Minister indicated that the assailant had a license to carry a weapon, owned a Glock pistol and obtained an AK-47 in the period before the attack. The legal arrest documents, he said, note that Alazo Baró claimed to suffer from a mental disorder, for which he had received hospital care and was prescribed medication, adding that the U.S. government’s own document indicates that a package of white powder was found in the suspect’s car, which was identified as cocaine.
The Minister questioned how the United States government, evidently well aware of these facts, could have allowed this person to act in such a premeditated fashion with the intention of attacking and killing.
Legal documents show that Alazo Baró acted out of hatred for Cuba and fear of aggressions by alleged Cuban criminal groups, which everyone knows do not exist, the Foreign Minister noted.
He stated that Alazo Baró was associated with a religious center in Miami called the Doral Jesus Worship Center, where persons gather who have known records of supporting aggression, hostility and violence against Cuba. Here he came in contact with Pastor Frank López, an individual who maintains close relations with individuals like Senator Marco Rubio and other figures known for their extremism against Cuba and promoters of aggression against our country, including Congressman Díaz-Balart.
The Cuban government awaits the results of a thorough, exhaustive investigation of this terrorist attack. We will see if the United States government finds any plausible explanation for Alazo Baró’s ties with extremist, violent groups and the obvious relationship between those ties and the attack on our diplomatic mission, the Minister stated.
He indicated that Cuba will continue to fully guarantee the security of the United States embassy in Havana, its diplomats and all others.
