Dear National Network On Cuba Members, Friends and Member Organizations;
Greetings of Solidarity and Struggle:
As Cuba solidarity activists, the struggle for peace. environmental protection and the elimination of foreign military bases is a crucial component to of our solidarity work.
It becomes even more significant when we understand that in 1903, the U.S. flag was raised over a 117.6 square km to the east of Guantanamo Bay. This United States occupation of Cuba and presence on Cuban soil was the first and set the precedence and model for the over 865 current U.S. military bases spread around the world in 155 countries. These bases serve to supply and advance the United States culture of never ending war.
Cuba and especially the residents of Guantanamo state have suffered the indignation caused by this occupation for the last 115 years, with no end in sight.
Today U.S. imperialism and its military might has its sights set on Venezuela, a sister country of Cuba, and has also added Nicaragua and re-emphasized Cuba to its list for regime change. The so-called “troika of tyranny” is an insult and affront to these peace loving nations; members of CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States). For these profound reasons, we, the Co-Chairs of the NNOC call upon our member organizations to endorse and participate in these upcoming activities:
The national mobilizations include:
- The No to NATO, War and Racism March, starting at Lafayette Square in front of the White House, 1 p.m., March 30;
- A Concert for Peace and to End War, sponsored by organizations including the Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign, in Franklin Square in Washington, D.C., 1 p.m.-8 p.m., March 31;
- World Peace Council Anti-NATO Conference, St. Stephen and the Incarnation Episcopal Church, Washington, D.C., 3 p.m.-7 p.m., March 31;
- No to NATO—Yes to Peace and Disarmament Counter Summit, location to be announced, all day April 2;
- No to NATO—Yes to Peace Festival, St. Stephen and the Incarnation Episcopal Church, 12 p.m.-10 p.m., April 3;
- Procession from MLK Memorial to rally at Freedom Plaza, Washington, D.C., during the day, April 4, details to come;
