  • Tuesday, July 14 | 7 pm: What’s it like to Study Medicine in Cuba?
Join us for a very special event right before our next Cuba Coalition meeting, at Milwaukee’s Central United Methodist Church, 639 N. 25th St. at Wisconsin Ave. Hear & support the 2 young women from Wisconsin who are studying medicine in Cuba tuition-free: they’ll share their experiences and a slide show, with information with how others may pursue this opportunity. There is no admission charge, and they will offer free blood pressure checks after their talk, but we’ll be welcoming donations to assist them with travel & expenses (tax free if made out to IFCO).  They’ll also have some photos of classic cars in Cuba. After their presentation and discussion, everyone is welcome help us plan our participation in the July 25th Latino Carnival Parade and Festival in Milwaukee; this year’s theme is the African Diaspora in Latin America, with a focus on Cuba, Puerto Rico and 3 other nations.
  • Saturday, July 25 | 11 am: Latino Carnival Parade and Festival in Milwaukee
Parade starts at 11th & National Ave., & goes east to Water Street, where the festival will take place. 8,000 people are expected, & we’ve been invited to have a float in the parade and a booth at the Festival. Our tentative title & theme is “Cuba: Doctors to the World.” Volunteers needed to make and staff the float, and booth!
Helpers of all ages make the Caravan roll! (Scot went on the Caravan in 2014; he was so moved that he bought this bus for the Cuban people in 2015 & drove it all the way from Milwaukee to Salt Lake & then Texas, en route to Cuba!)

A Very Successful Sendoff Supported the Pastors for Peace Caravan & MU Muralists — See these 2 followup events! Our June 27th event was quite a success. Over 75 people, ranging from MU students, staff & alum; adult Black sorority & many other African American women & others showing their support for the MU students whose mural was censored; Casa Maria Catholic Worker folks (they also received our extra food for their mission on the Westside); Central UMC, other Protestant & Unitarian congregants; and leaders & members of Mosque No. 3; to name a few. We raised nearly $1,000 in donations, and loaded c.40 packages of crutches, bikes, wheel chairs, medical books & supplies, etc. To see & follow the Caravan’s colorful progress in some 50 U.S. cities, follow Pastors for Peace’s Facebook page.

The Marquette U. students & staff gave a heartfelt presentation of their experiences with the mural project that the MU administration summarily destroyed & then it terminated the Center Director. For anyone interested, they have set up a study collective that will have its first meeting on Sunday, July 26th, with a discussion of Assata: An Autobiography.

Purdue Political Science Prof. Harry Targ began his talk with this moving poem on the conditions in Cuba that led to the 1959 Revolution, followed by his summary history of US/Cuba relations & the current status.
An expert on U.S. Foreign Policy and lecturer on political economy, Prof. Targ will also speak and lead a discussion on Thursday, July 23, at 7 pm at Milwaukee’s Riverwest Public House Cooperative,  815 E. Locust St., on Globalization, Austerity & Resistance – From Greece to Wisconsin.
